WHILE YOU'RE AT THE MARKET, COULD YOU PICK UP SOME CHEMOTHERAPY

We have all had someone say "While you are at the market, could you pick up some milk". Well, chemotherapy is like that in Nigeria. Your doctor writes what you need and you go to the open market and pick it up! Then you bring it to the hospital and it is administered. A course of chemo for breast cancer (doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, 5-FU) costs about $100 and the hospital charges are about $25. Not much unless your monthly salary is only $100.

Chemotherapy from the market
This poor lady came to see me today. We treated her with neoadjuvant chemotherapy then performed a radical mastectomy. She came for additional chemo. Unfortunately, she is losing the battle. The dark spot below her skin graft is dermal invasion with tumor and she has severe back pain. No doubt she has metastatic disease. She continues to fight.
